Birds and ice pelting windows

It's that time of year here in my neck of the woods. For some inexplicable reason, the birds swoop into my windows over and over again making horrendous thuds. Whether they think they are fighting another bird in the reflection, trying to mate with other bird (which is fairly odd if you think about it), or simply have gone Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs I don't really know. It lasts every year for about one week and I think it's tapering off now. If you have any bright ideas about why it happens or even how to dissuade the little birdbrains from bashing themselves into my windows, I'd be very grateful. I've tried putting up reflective tinfoil and stickers in the windows to no avail.

Maybe the birds come every year to try to jolt me out of my rut. "Try something new" they implore, "stop beating your head against the same wall day after day". I'll think about it and get back to you.

Would you believe it just began copiously sleeting here as I wrote that last paragraph? Guess I'm on to something. More later then.

Namaste,

Jan

If you come up with something, be sure to let me know. I work part time in an office where I am the only one in the building. Certain times of year this HUGE black bird does exactly what you are describing. I about jump out of my skin everytime he hits the window.

Punkn,

Glad I'm not the only one who experiences this. Began to feel like I'm in that Hitchcock movie, "The Birds"!

Kristina,

Yup, sleeting and then sunshine... go figure!

Birds hitting windows used to be a bad omen, but I won't go into that superstition. Needless to say, it is a sad twist of nature. It has been my experience that windows give off reflections, i.e. trees, from the surroundings and our young feathered friends believe they are flying into an open space. Large picture windows are the worst. Pulling curtains or blinds sometimes helps at this time of year.

A little bird once told me that the nice thing about ceasing to bat your head against a brick wall was that it "feels so good when you stop."

Very weird about the birds - maybe it is related to mating. hmmm....And ugh, sleet! I hope sunshine comes your way today!

I am happy to report that we are finally going to reach 60 this week in my neck of the woods! I hope the nice weather spreads your way.

Sleet? Yikes. I just saw some cute baby sparrows in my yard.....spring MUST be here. :)

That is totally strange - it happens a lot in one week? Each year? I've never heard of that.

Sleet is cold - hope it's warmed up some since then!
